Why Mobile Homes Need Special Insulation

Mobile homes are more exposed to the elements than any other style of housing because of their unique layout. Utility hookups, ductwork, and water lines all run underneath the home in an open crawlspace, rather than inside walls or a basement like a conventional house. That means careful attention is needed to insulate ducts, seal for air and moisture, and provide proper venting to keep critters out.

Unified Home Solutions saw a real need in the Northeast Ohio community to better serve residents living in mobile homes, prefab houses, and manufactured homes. We are one of the only mobile home insulation providers in the Akron area, and our customers can attest to the difference that proper insulation and weatherization makes in comfort and energy savings.

How We Insulate Mobile Homes

From the belly to the roof, we cover every part of your mobile home's thermal envelope

Belly and Underbelly Insulation

Mobile homes lose most of their heat through the floor. We install a breathable underbelly liner underneath the flooring, then fill it with blown fiberglass insulation. Fiberglass is light enough to avoid weighing down the floor while providing maximum protection. The underbelly holds everything securely in place so insulation never falls away. Most mobile homes reach R-38 or higher after we insulate, which is double what even the newest models come with from the factory.

Roof Insulation for Mobile Homes

The roof is the second biggest source of energy loss on a mobile home, accounting for 10 to 15 percent of total heat loss. Heat gets absorbed through metallic rooftops in the summer and escapes in the winter. We use an interior drill to access the upper roof space and blow lightweight fiberglass insulation into the area. We use fiberglass instead of cellulose because it is lighter and handles moisture better, which is important for mobile homes that are more exposed to the elements.

Weatherization and Air Sealing

In addition to insulation, all ductwork and water lines underneath a mobile home need protection. Insulating the belly encapsulates the ductwork, makes the home warmer, and helps the furnace run less. We also seal air leaks around doors, windows, pipes, and any other openings where drafts (and bugs!) can get inside. Proper weatherization keeps your thermal envelope tight from top to bottom.

Professional Installation vs DIY

Some companies and DIY homeowners use wires or materials like landscaping fabric or plastic sheeting to hold insulation in place. We have seen these cheaper solutions fail over time, tearing away or stretching until they burst. When insulation falls away, it creates cold spots and lets in drafts. Our blown fiberglass held in place with a purpose-built paper underbelly is the best option for long-lasting mobile home insulation, no matter the season.
